## The twelve rooms of your life
If the planets are the actors in your kundli, the houses are the rooms they perform in. Each of the twelve houses (bhavas) governs a specific area of life. The planet sitting in or aspecting a house brings its qualities into that area.
This is what makes jyotish reading possible. By knowing which planets sit in which houses, you can read systematically what each area of life is shaped by.
This article walks through all twelve houses, what each governs, and how to start reading your own chart through the house system.
## The structure
A kundli, in the South Indian style, is drawn as a square divided into twelve smaller squares. In the North Indian style, it is drawn as a diamond with four triangles. In both styles, the twelve houses are arranged in a specific order.
The first house (lagna) is determined by the rashi rising at your birth. The other eleven houses follow in fixed order around the chart. The rashi in each house is determined by the lagna; the planets in each house are determined by where they sat at your birth.
Two systems exist for assigning planets to houses:
**Rashi system (whole-sign houses):** A planet is in whatever house its rashi occupies. This is the oldest system and most commonly used in Indian jyotish.
**Bhava system (degree-based houses):** A planet is in whatever house its exact degree falls within, after a more complex calculation accounting for the lagna's degree. Used in some modern South Indian schools.
For most purposes, the rashi system is what you encounter first.
## The twelve houses
### First house: lagna, the self
What it governs: the body, personality, vitality, head, early childhood, general life direction.
Already covered in our article on the lagna. The first house is the foundation from which everything else is read.
### Second house: dhana, accumulated wealth
What it governs: accumulated savings, speech, family lineage, food, the right eye, the mouth and face.
A strong second house gives material security, eloquent speech, good food and drink, and harmonious relationship with the family of origin. A weak second house indicates struggles in any of these areas.
The lord of the second house, its placement and dignity, tells about earned versus inherited wealth, about whether the native speaks well or struggles to express, and about the harmony of family meals.
### Third house: parakrama, courage
What it governs: courage, younger siblings, short journeys, written and spoken communication, ears, hands and arms.
A strong third house gives bravery in difficult situations, good relationships with younger brothers and sisters, the ability to write or speak persuasively, and skill with hands. A weak third house indicates timidity, sibling conflicts, or difficulties in expressing ideas.
This is a "trishadaya" house (third, sixth, eleventh), houses associated with effort. Strong planets here give upward mobility through hard work.
### Fourth house: sukha, foundation of comfort
What it governs: the mother, the home, real estate and property, vehicles, education up to undergraduate level, the heart (emotionally and physiologically).
A strong fourth house gives a happy home, supportive mother, comfortable property, good early education, and emotional stability. A weak fourth house indicates troubles with the mother, displacement from home, or emotional restlessness.
The fourth house is a "kendra" (cardinal) house, one of the most important houses in any chart. The placement of its lord is one of the key indicators of life happiness.
### Fifth house: putra, creation
What it governs: children, intelligence, romantic relationships, speculation, mantra siddhi (success in spiritual practice), creative output.
A strong fifth house gives intelligent children, sharp mental capacity, success in love, fortunate speculative gains, and capacity for serious spiritual practice. A weak fifth house indicates difficulty with children, learning challenges, romantic struggles, or gambling losses.
The fifth house is the second of the "trikona" (trine) houses, the most auspicious houses in jyotish. Strong planets here are especially beneficial.
### Sixth house: ari, enemies and obstacles
What it governs: enemies, debts, diseases, daily routines, service work, small animals.
This is one of the "dusthana" (difficult) houses. A weak sixth house actually gives some benefits: it suggests the native has few enemies, manageable debts, and reasonable health. A strong sixth house (or strong planets here) indicates the capacity to overcome enemies, manage debts, recover from illness, but often through struggle.
The sixth house is one of the houses related to karmic debt. Many jyotishis read the sixth carefully when health issues arise.
### Seventh house: kalatra, partners
What it governs: spouse, business partners, marriage, public reputation, foreign travel.
A strong seventh house gives a good spouse, harmonious business partnerships, popularity, and successful overseas travel or relocation. A weak seventh house indicates marriage difficulties, partnership breakdowns, or public criticism.
The seventh house is a "kendra" (cardinal). The seventh lord's placement and dignity, plus the planets in the seventh, are central to marriage compatibility analysis.
### Eighth house: ayur, longevity
What it governs: longevity, sudden events, transformations, inheritance, in-laws, the spouse's wealth, occult knowledge.
This is the second "dusthana" house. A weak eighth house gives manageable life events; a strong eighth house brings major life transformations, often unwelcome but ultimately purifying.
The eighth house is particularly relevant in Saturn transit analysis (Ashtama Shani) and in evaluating Sade Sati's effects. Planets in the eighth house, especially natural malefics, often indicate periods of significant life upheaval.
### Ninth house: bhagya, fortune
What it governs: fortune, dharma, the father, long journeys, higher education, religious teachers, philosophy.
This is one of the most auspicious houses. The ninth is called the "bhagya bhava" (house of fortune) and is the third "trikona" house. A strong ninth house gives general good fortune, a wise and supportive father, opportunity for deep learning, religious inclination, and beneficial travel.
The ninth house, more than any other, indicates whether life will be generally favorable or generally challenging. Strong ninth lord and strong planets in the ninth house are among the best chart indicators.
### Tenth house: karma, action
What it governs: career, public reputation, government, the highest worldly achievement, social status.
This is the "karma sthana" (house of action) and a "kendra" house. The tenth house is the apex of any kundli. The career indicators of the chart are read here. A strong tenth house gives career success, public recognition, and the ability to achieve in the world.
The tenth lord, its placement, and the planets in the tenth house are the most important indicators for career analysis.
### Eleventh house: labha, gains
What it governs: gains, income from career, friends and circles, elder siblings, fulfillment of desires, the left ear.
A strong eleventh house gives substantial income, beneficial friends, supportive elder siblings, and fulfillment of life's wishes. A weak eleventh house indicates persistent income shortfalls or social isolation.
The eleventh house is the third "upachaya" house, houses that improve over time. Strong planets here often give increasing prosperity through life rather than early gains.
### Twelfth house: vyaya, losses
What it governs: losses, foreign lands, expenditure, bed pleasures, enlightenment, hospitals, prisons.
This is the third "dusthana" house. A weak twelfth house gives controlled expenses and balanced losses; a strong twelfth house indicates either major losses (financial or material) or major dissolution into spiritual life.
The twelfth house has an interesting dual character. Planets here are simultaneously associated with the dissolution of attachments (which can mean either material loss or spiritual liberation). Strong spiritual seekers often have strong twelfth houses. So do those who lose substantially through wrong investment.
## How to read your chart through the houses
A practical exercise.
**Step 1.** Generate your kundli with the rashi placements clearly marked.
**Step 2.** Identify which planet sits in each house. Note also which planets aspect each house.
**Step 3.** For each significant area of life, read the corresponding house.
For example, to read your career: look at the tenth house (planets sitting there, the lord of the tenth, planets aspecting the tenth). The combination tells you the career's general character.
To read your marriage: look at the seventh house and seventh lord.
To read your finances: look at the second house (savings), eleventh house (income), and the placement of Brihaspati and Shukra.
**Step 4.** Read the planets first by their natural qualities. Brihaspati in the tenth house, generally positive for career. Shani in the seventh house, often delaying marriage but creating stability when it comes.
**Step 5.** Then refine by the planet's dignity in its current rashi. A weak Brihaspati gives reduced benefit. A strong Shani gives greater stability.
This is the foundation of chart reading. With practice, the pattern recognition deepens.
## The aspects (drishti)
Beyond direct placement, planets also "aspect" other houses through their drishti (gaze). Each planet has specific houses it casts aspects on.
**All planets:** Aspect the seventh house from their position.
**Mars:** Additionally aspects the fourth and eighth houses from its position.
**Jupiter:** Additionally aspects the fifth and ninth houses.
**Saturn:** Additionally aspects the third and tenth houses.
**Rahu and Ketu:** Same aspects as Saturn (third, seventh, tenth).
These aspects modify the houses they reach. A house that is empty of planets can still be strongly influenced by aspects from outside.
For example: your career analysis must include not just the tenth house's planets but also any planet aspecting the tenth (Mars from the third or seventh, Jupiter from the second or sixth, Saturn from the first or fourth).
This is what makes chart reading complex and what separates a competent jyotishi from a memorized list-reciter. The full reading involves the interaction of houses, planets, aspects, and dignities.
## Closing
The twelve houses are the practical map of any kundli. Knowing them is the first step in being able to read your own chart at any depth.
Begin with your own. Identify the planets in each house. Notice the patterns. Compare what you see with your actual experience of life. Where the chart matches, the system is working. Where it does not match, refine your reading (or, more often, recognize where your chart's specific complexity is producing modifications to the base reading).
The system is deep. Sanatani jyotishis have refined it across two thousand years. With patience, you can begin to read your own chart with growing competence. The kundli is one of the cleaner mirrors any tradition offers. The houses are how you read what it shows.
