Sthal-Parichay · The Place
Summary
A historic Dravidian temple on the banks of the Vaigai river in Madurai, dedicated to Meenakshi (Parvati) and her consort Sundareshwar (Shiva).
Mahatva · Significance
Why this place matters
Unusual among major Shiva temples in that the primary deity is the Goddess — Meenakshi is worshipped first, and Sundareshwar second. The temple complex covers 14 acres and is enclosed by four perimeter gopurams that range from 45 to 52 metres in height, covered in over 33,000 painted sculptures of deities, asuras and celestial beings. The Hall of a Thousand Pillars (Aayiram Kaal Mandapam) actually has 985 pillars, each carved with a unique figure. The Chithirai Festival, celebrating the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareshwar, draws over a million devotees each April.
Itihaas · History
A walk through time
The temple has a documented history reaching back to the 6th century CE, though tradition holds it as far older. The current structure was largely built during the rule of Tirumala Nayak in the 16th and 17th centuries, after extensive damage from earlier invasions. The Madurai Nayak dynasty's patronage gave the temple its distinct Dravidian character — towering polychrome gopurams, sprawling mandapams and the iconic golden lotus tank (Porthamarai Kulam) at the centre. The bronze sculptures of the temple are considered among the finest examples of Chola-Nayak craftsmanship.
