How this place came to be
Founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1898 as the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math (monastic order) and the Ramakrishna Mission (philanthropic arm). The main temple, consecrated in 1938, was designed by Swami Vijnanananda to be an architectural synthesis — a Hindu temple in plan but reading as a church, mosque, or Buddhist vihara depending on the angle one approaches it from. This was a deliberate expression of Sri Ramakrishna’s teaching that all paths lead to the same truth.
The campus also holds the shrines of Sri Sarada Devi (the Holy Mother), Swami Vivekananda, and Swami Brahmananda, alongside the Ramakrishna Museum which preserves the relics and personal effects of these figures. The Mission runs hospitals, schools, technical institutes, and disaster relief operations across India and overseas — among the largest networks of organised Hindu philanthropy in the world.
