Sundar Kaand: The Razing of Lanka – A Tale of Hanuman’s Heroism

The Sundar Kaand, a crucial chapter from the epic Ramayana, highlights the bravery and devotion of Lord Hanuman. It tells the story of his journey to Lanka (modern-day Sri Lanka) to rescue Sita, Lord Rama’s wife, who was abducted by the demon king Ravana. This episode is widely admired for its messages of courage, loyalty, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

Hanuman’s Mission to Lanka

After Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana began their search for her. In their journey, they met Hanuman, a powerful monkey-god and a devoted follower of Lord Rama. With his immense strength and abilities, Hanuman was tasked with locating Sita and delivering Rama’s message to her.

He crossed the ocean in one giant step and came to the island of Lanka. His task was perilous as Lanka was guarded by Ravana’s host of demons. He could steal into the city and search for Sita safely as Hanuman proved to be intelligent and a master of stealth.

Finding Sita

Long years had passed, and it was when Hanuman finally found Sita in the beautiful garden of Ravana known as Ashoka Vatika. For she greatly missed her sweet Lord Rama and was filled with sorrows and despair. Knowing that indeed it was Hanuman who had come to the garden, he comforted her by showing her the ring of Rama as a sign of love and promise to rescue her. Distressed as she was, Sita felt new hope and strength through the message brought by Hanuman.

Hanuman’s Warning to Ravana

He wanted to give a warning to Ravana for his meeting with Sita. He let himself be caught by the soldiers of Ravana, anticipating that this will make him face Ravana. Then Hanuman was taken to the court of Ravana, where he told him again to return Sita and save destruction, which would surely erupt if Ravana refused it. Ravana, holding his head high with arrogance, did not heed Hanuman’s warning and ordered to set his tail on fire.

The Razing of Lanka

Instead of losing to this punishment, Hanuman used it as a boon. With his tail on fire, he jumped across the city of Lanka, catching fire buildings, towers, and palaces. The once-mighty city of Lanka was covered in flames, and there was chaos all around. On fire with rage, Hanuman made sure that the destruction did not reach Sita. After his round, he returned to Rama and told him of the fate of Sita.
